Painters & Decorators in Letchworth Garden City
Letchworth was the world's first garden city, and its rendered Arts and Crafts houses need careful exterior work done in keeping with the town.

Letchworth Garden City was laid out in the early 1900s as the first garden city, and much of the original town still looks the way its planners intended. Around the Broadway, Norton Common and the older streets you'll find Arts and Crafts cottages with roughcast render, steep tiled roofs and small-paned casement windows. Further out, Jackmans, Grange and Lordship are mostly post-war and later housing, which is more straightforward to decorate.
The rendered houses are where the care goes. Roughcast holds dirt and old flaking paint in its texture, so it has to be washed down and brushed back properly, and any cracks filled, before masonry paint goes on. The timber casements and doors on these cottages usually carry many layers of old paint, and they last far longer when they're cut back and primed rather than glossed over again.
Before changing anything outside, check with the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation. Many homes in the town are covered by its Scheme of Management, and changing external colours or painting brickwork that has never been painted can need the Foundation's consent. A like-for-like repaint in the existing colours is usually simpler. We're happy to talk it through when we look at the job, and inside the house there's no such question.
Letchworth also has a large amount of business premises, from town-centre shops and offices to the industrial estates. We take on commercial and industrial decorating as well as homes, planned around your working hours. At about nineteen miles from our Broxbourne base it's towards the edge of our usual area, so we plan Letchworth jobs as full working days rather than short visits.

Cat Crossan via Facebook“We have had our bedrooms recently decorated and we are so happy with the results. Bill had a difficult job taking off wallpaper in all of the rooms, then preparing them for papering with lining paper. The paper he used is really high quality and has given a flawless finish. He then painted them all. I was worried we'd be able to see the joins but it's completely smooth. We also had a patch where we'd had a leak and he repaired it so you can't tell. Would definitely use him again for any future decorating projects. Really professional and excellent with communication.”

Jason Plysl via Facebook“Professional service from start to finish. Quote was broken down in detail and reasonably priced. No hidden extras. Communication was clear and honest. The work carried out was of a high standard. Bill and Ash were very polite and tidy, clearing up any mess before finishing each day. Highly recommended. I will definitely be acquiring their services again.”

Painting & decorating in Letchworth Garden City: your questions
- Do you need permission to repaint the outside of a house in Letchworth?
- Not for decorating inside. Outside, many homes are covered by the Heritage Foundation's Scheme of Management, and changing colours or painting unpainted brick can need consent. Repainting in the existing colours is usually simpler. Check with the Foundation before work starts if you're planning a change.
- Do you paint roughcast and rendered walls?
- Yes. Roughcast needs a thorough wash-down and brushing back, cracks filling and the right masonry paint, applied so it gets into the texture. Most of the work is in that preparation.
- Do you decorate commercial and industrial units in Letchworth?
- Yes. We decorate shops, offices, industrial units and warehouses, and plan the work around your hours so the business can keep running.
- Do you cover Baldock and the villages around Letchworth?
- Yes. Baldock and the villages around it are part of the same trip, as are Hitchin and the Stevenage area.
- Is the quote free?
- Yes. We'll come and look at the job and give you a written quote with no obligation and no hidden extras.
