Colour Matching & Blending

Colour matched to existing shades and blended repairs, plus honest advice on schemes that suit the room.

Colour Matching & Blending by BGDecorators in Hertfordshire

Getting the colour right is half the job. We help you choose colours that work with the room's light and your furnishings, match existing shades when you're only redoing part of a space, and blend repairs so new work disappears into the old.

Whether you've a colour you love and want matched, an awkward patch to blend in, or you're starting from scratch and want a steer, we'll take the guesswork out of it.

What’s involved

  • Matching existing wall, woodwork or ceiling colours when you're not redoing the whole room
  • Blending repaired or patched areas so they don't stand out
  • Advice on schemes that suit the room's light and aspect
  • Help judging how a colour will actually look at scale, not just on a tester card
  • Coordinating finishes, matt, eggshell, satin, across walls and woodwork

What affects the cost

Every job is different, so we quote each one rather than publish fixed prices. These are the things we look at:

  • Whether it's a straightforward match or blending into a larger existing area
  • How many colours and finishes are involved
  • The condition and age of the existing paint you're matching to

How the job runs

Every job follows the same four stages, consultation, preparation, the work itself, then a proper clean-up. For colour matching & blending, that looks like this:

  1. Look at the colour and the room

We look at the existing colour, the light the room gets and what you're trying to achieve, then give you an honest steer on whether a match, a blend or a full repaint will give the better result.

  2. Match or test

Existing shades matched from a physical sample — scanned and mixed by a merchant where needed — or testers painted on the actual wall and judged in daylight and in the evening, never just on a card.

  3. Apply and blend

New paint worked into a natural break — a corner, an architrave, a change of plane — so the join disappears instead of sitting mid-wall where the light will find it.

  4. Check it in the light

A final look together, ideally at more than one time of day, because colour reads differently morning to evening. If it doesn't disappear into the wall, we'll put it right.

Common questions

Can you match a colour I already have?
Usually yes, most colours can be matched, and many merchants can scan and mix to a sample. Bear in mind older paint fades over time, so an exact match to a wall painted years ago isn't always possible; in that case blending into a natural break or repainting the full wall gives a better result.
I can't decide on a colour, can you help?
That's a normal part of the job. We'll talk through how the room is used, the light it gets and your furnishings, and suggest options. Testers on the actual wall, seen in daylight and in the evening, always beat a card.
Why does my touch-up paint look different?
Even the same tin can look different once the original has aged, and a patch in the middle of a wall catches the light differently. That's why we blend into a natural break or repaint the whole wall rather than spot-dabbing it.
Can you match a colour from a photo?
A photo alone isn't reliable — screens shift colour too much to trust. A physical sample works far better: a paint chip, a cushion cover, even a flake of the old paint. From that, a merchant can scan and mix a close match, and we'll always test it on the wall before committing to the whole area.

We have had our bedrooms recently decorated and we are so happy with the results. Bill had a difficult job taking off wallpaper in all of the rooms, then preparing them for papering with lining paper. The paper he used is really high quality and has given a flawless finish. He then painted them all. I was worried we'd be able to see the joins but it's completely smooth. We also had a patch where we'd had a leak and he repaired it so you can't tell. Would definitely use him again for any future decorating projects. Really professional and excellent with communication.

Professional service from start to finish. Quote was broken down in detail and reasonably priced. No hidden extras. Communication was clear and honest. The work carried out was of a high standard. Bill and Ash were very polite and tidy, clearing up any mess before finishing each day. Highly recommended. I will definitely be acquiring their services again.

BGDecorators did an excellent job painting the outside of our house. The service was extremely professional, the team were polite and friendly, everything was left clean and tidy, and the finish was to a very high standard. Really pleased with the result. Highly recommended.
