Painters & Decorators in Hitchin

Hitchin is an old market town with Georgian streets and plenty of Victorian terraces, so much of our work there is on period homes.

Painting and decorating in Hitchin by BGDecorators

Hitchin grew up around its market place and St Mary's Church, and the streets around them, Bancroft and Tilehouse Street among them, still have Georgian frontages and older timber-framed buildings. Out from the centre, the roads toward the station and Walsworth are lined with Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and Westmill, Purwell, Oughton and Highover are mainly post-war and newer housing.

The terraces make up a lot of the decorating here, and they follow a pattern. High ceilings, original cornices and picture rails, plaster that's been patched over the years, and hallways and stairs that are taller than they look. Getting a good finish means filling and lining where the walls need it, cutting in carefully around the original details, and giving the hallway and stairs the extra time and access they take.

In the town centre, many of the older buildings sit in the conservation area. Decorating inside is normally straightforward, but for anything unusual on a listed building, any consent needed is the owner's to arrange. We match our materials and finishes to the age of the property rather than treating it like a new house.

Hitchin is about eighteen miles from our Broxbourne base, alongside Stevenage and Letchworth, and we plan jobs here as full working days. As well as homes, we decorate shops, offices and other business premises in and around the town.

“We have had our bedrooms recently decorated and we are so happy with the results. Bill had a difficult job taking off wallpaper in all of the rooms, then preparing them for papering with lining paper. The paper he used is really high quality and has given a flawless finish. He then painted them all. I was worried we'd be able to see the joins but it's completely smooth. We also had a patch where we'd had a leak and he repaired it so you can't tell. Would definitely use him again for any future decorating projects. Really professional and excellent with communication.”

“Professional service from start to finish. Quote was broken down in detail and reasonably priced. No hidden extras. Communication was clear and honest. The work carried out was of a high standard. Bill and Ash were very polite and tidy, clearing up any mess before finishing each day. Highly recommended. I will definitely be acquiring their services again.”

“BGDecorators did an excellent job painting the outside of our house. The service was extremely professional, the team were polite and friendly, everything was left clean and tidy, and the finish was to a very high standard. Really pleased with the result. Highly recommended.”

Painting & decorating in Hitchin: your questions

Do you cover Hitchin and the nearby villages?
Yes: the town itself and villages such as Ickleford, Pirton, St Ippolyts and Gosmore, as well as Letchworth and Stevenage nearby.
Can you repaint a Victorian terrace with high ceilings and original features?
Yes. We fill and line the walls where they need it, cut in carefully around cornices, picture rails and ceiling roses, and bring the right access for tall hallways and stairs.
Do you hang wallpaper in older houses?
Yes. Older walls are rarely flat, so we often hang lining paper first, then the paper itself, with the pattern matched at every seam.
Do you do commercial decorating in Hitchin?
Yes. Shops, offices and other premises, planned around your opening hours, and fully insured with public liability up to £2 million.
