Hatfield has two distinct sides: the historic streets of Old Hatfield by Hatfield House and the station, and the post-war new town that grew up around the de Havilland aircraft works, running through Birchwood, Oxlease and South Hatfield, with modern developments out at Ellenbrook. In Old Hatfield the houses are genuinely old — brick frontages around Fore Street and the church, timber sashes and panelled doors carrying generations of paint. Decorating them well is mostly preparation: cutting old coatings back properly, filling and sealing older plaster, and choosing traditional finishes that suit the property's age rather than fighting it.

The new-town streets are a different job. Solid 1950s and 60s brick and render mostly wants a clean, efficient refresh — and the rendered and pebbledashed frontages common here come up well with a proper wash-down, crack repair and two coats of masonry paint. Inside, they're straightforward rooms that repaint quickly once the prep is done.
