Epping is a market town on the edge of Epping Forest, and its long High Street — with a weekly market and a run of older buildings, some of them listed — sets the tone: Georgian and Victorian frontages, rendered and weatherboarded cottages, and well-kept family homes spreading out toward Coopersale and the lanes. It's an area where presentation matters, and that suits how we work: careful preparation, crisp lines and a clean, tidy worksite.

The older properties around the High Street and the town-centre conservation area need a patient hand. Original sash windows and panelled doors carry decades of paint that wants cutting back properly rather than another quick coat over the top, and older walls reward thorough filling and the right primers. Weatherboarded exteriors in particular live or die by their preparation — bare and flaking timber has to be got back to a sound surface before any finish will protect it.

Away from the centre, Epping is 1930s semis, post-war family houses and larger detached homes in and around Coopersale. As a Central line commuter town, it's full of busy households, so we plan jobs around real life: room by room, the house kept liveable, everything sheeted, and a tidy-up at the end of each day.

The forest edge brings one more thing worth knowing: mature trees mean shade, and shaded elevations stay damp for longer after rain. Exterior paintwork here only lasts when the washing down, priming and timing around dry weather are done properly — which is how we approach every exterior job, in Epping more than most places.
